Threat to UK Fire Service

Threat to UK fire services
Every signature on our petition is another voice: www.keeptheoptout.com
THE PROBLEM:
Retained firefighters usually have full-time job. The Fire Service is a second job. Theses Volunteer fire fighters can spend up to 120 hours per week “on-call” - in their own homes or at their workplaces, but are there if and when we need them in emergencies.
A European Directive limits working hours to 48 per week - and this includes the time retained firefighters spend on call. Up to now, British workers have been able to opt out of the Directive.
That right is about to be taken away.
Unless something is done, dozens of fire stations will have to offer reduced services.
“For some people, especially in rural areas, those firefighters on call can mean the difference between life and death” - Tavish Scott, Leader Scottish Liberal Democrats
THE SOLUTION:
We need to allow retained firefighters to go on serving their communities. The governments in London needs to ensure that implementation will allow the continued operation of a fire service with retained firefighters at its heart.
And we need public opinion to back up retained fire fighters.
That’s where you come in.
By signing our petition you can add to the pressure. Every signature makes it more likely that we can persuade the government to keep the firefighters’ opt-out clause - and keep our firefighting service full-time: www.keeptheoptout.com

Cove Brook Bursts its Banks Again

February 15th, 2009 by craigcard

Cove Brook again burst it banks along Anglesey Ave and Cheyne Way for the third time in three years.

Exceptionally heavy rainfall on Monday night lead to a significant amount of surface water flooding parts of Cove Brook breaking its banks again. Rushmoor’s Duty Officer on the night, James Duggin, was called out to assist with the Cove Brook flooding and sandbags were distributed to local residents. James was pleased by the positive attitude and community spirit from the residents in the area. Mayfield ward councilors appreciated the support the Council supplied in the middle of the night.

Surface water causing flooding of parts of Cove Brook is to be taken up by Rushmoor Council with the Environment Agency to ensure that issues are picked up.

Some read cutting has happened along Cove Brook since the flooding at the beginning of the week.
